The weekly routine, start to finish
Test first, before you touch anything, so you are dosing to real numbers. Skim the surface and empty the baskets, brush the walls and steps, then vacuum. Add chemicals in the order that works with the water rather than against it: alkalinity, then pH, then calcium, then stabilizer and salt, and chlorine last. Add one thing at a time with the pump running, and re-test before adding more. The whole loop is fifteen or twenty minutes once it is a habit.
Add chemicals in the right order
Order matters because each adjustment moves the next reading. Alkalinity buffers pH, so setting it first stops pH bouncing while you chase it. Acid lowers both pH and alkalinity at once. Calcium and stabilizer dissolve slowly and should settle before you judge the result. Never mix chemicals in a bucket, and never add acid and chlorine together — concentrated, they produce toxic chlorine gas.
Monthly and seasonal work
Once a month, test the slow movers: alkalinity, cyanuric acid, calcium hardness, and salt if you run a generator. These drift quietly and are what turn a well-run pool cloudy in August. Once or twice a season, deep-clean the filter with a proper chemical soak rather than a hose rinse. In spring, open early — algae takes off when water warms, so beating it there is far easier than fighting it later. In fall, close once the water is consistently under 60°F (15°C).
