Pool salt calculator

Salt chlorine generators need the right salt level to make chlorine. Enter your current and target salt (ppm) and pool volume to get the exact number of bags to add.

How much salt to add to a saltwater pool?

To raise salt by 1,000 ppm in 10,000 gallons takes about 83 lb (roughly two 40 lb bags). This calculator scales it to your exact volume and target. Most generators target around 3,200 ppm, but always check your cell’s manual — brands differ.

Adding salt the right way

Broadcast salt across the pool with the pump running (not through the skimmer), brush to help it dissolve, and run the pump 24 hours before trusting the generator’s salt reading. Don’t run the salt cell until the salt has fully dissolved.

Salt is too high?

There’s no way to remove salt chemically — you lower it by partially draining and refilling with fresh water. The calculator shows the percentage to replace when your target is below your current level.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of salt do I use?

Pure, non-iodized pool salt (sodium chloride), typically 99%+ pure. Avoid salt with anti-caking agents or iodine.

How long until the generator works?

Run the pump ~24 hours to fully dissolve and mix the salt before relying on the cell’s reading.
